Jack Russell Terrier head study - sculpture update

Well, having my sculpture cast in bronze has taken a much longer time than originally expected. I finally have the mold and TWO waxes which I have pulled from the original foundry I was going to use and will be taking to another foundry to have cast. I was unhappy with the service I was receiving at the original place I took my clay sculpture to. I kept getting promises which were never carried out. I am; however, extremely pleased with the mold and the waxes look great. I do hope to have an actual bronze to show on my website very soon. Hope everyone keeps coming back to see the final product!

"People's Choice Award" Canine Art Guild - Helping Paws 2008 exhibition
My painting of the pit bull puppy who was a victim of a home ear crop won the "People's Choice Award" in the Helping Paws 2008 on-line exhibition!  Please visit the Canine Art Guild  to view the exhibition. The wonderful man who adopted the puppy, "Cupcake", purchased the painting I titled "Innocent". I donated 100% of the money to the shelter who took in the puppy and provided her with veterinary care, love, and found her a loving home. The award money from the People's Choice Award, also went to the rescue organization. Please visit Almost Home NM to read "Cupcake's" story and to see the wonderful dogs and cats which need homes. This was a wonderful exhibition which provided many shelter's across the country needed money and exposure to the never ending cause to help abandoned and abused animals.

Clay sculpture after refining fur more.
My first completed sculpture, Jack Russell Terrier head study, is at the foundry! After getting some great comments from fellow artist's. I refined the fur more around the mouth and added some fur texture to the neck area below the collar. I felt very happy with the results and decided it was time to take it in to our local foundry "Adobe Forge & Foundry" in Albuq. I should have my first bronze next month!  Hopefully folks will like the personality I captured in the JRT head study and purchase him! I am having 3 cast to begin with. My husband and I will keep one (of course!) and I will have two to sell. I can always have more cast (up to 20, which is my edition size) should I be lucky enough to sell my first 2! I'll post pictures of my bronze when I have him back!

"Innocent"

This 5 week old Pit Bull puppy was found in the overnight drop box at our local animal shelter. Her ears were severely infected, after being inhumanely cut with a pair of household scissors or wire cutters, probably as early as 3 weeks of age. Janelle Chavez, founder of Almost Home NM, took the puppy in after the shelter contacted her. She required immediate veterinary care. Visiting this puppy, I was amazed at how playful, happy, and trusting she was after being horribly maimed and brutalized. “Cupcake” now has a loving forever home with her best friend, a Manx kitten "Bob Macaroni". The Canine Art Guild was going to have an on-line art exhibit to benefit shelter, rescue organizations. When I saw the story in our paper about this sweet puppy, I knew I had my inspiration for a painting and I knew immediately I would title the piece "Innocent". The painting was accepted into the show and was sold shortly afterwards to the kind man who provided "Cupcake" a loving home. I donated 100% of the sale of the piece to the rescue organization who took this puppy in, provided her with veterinary care, love and found her a wonderful home. Please visit http://www.canineartguild.com/gallery/, and view all the wonderful pieces of artwork created to help shelters around the world. You can also VOTE on your favorite piece and the top 3 people choice awards will have money donated to the respective shelters the artist has chosen. The show will be on-line until January.

Jack Russell Terrier sculpture head study, a work in progress

Jack Russell Terrier head study in clay
This is my first blog! I have always wanted to learn how to produce bronze sculptures. Several years ago I took my first workshop with Sandy Scott on "Sculpting Birds in Flight". It was a very challenging workshop, but I learned so much. Unfortunately, I never really followed through with completeing anything. I have a nice Owl which was started in the workshop, and everyday that I walk into my studio, it begs for my attention. This past June, I took my second sculpture workshop with Louise Peterson on "Sculpting the Dog". Once again inspired to sculpt, I absorbed so much from Louise and really wanted to get going once I returned home. This is a head study of our Jack Russell Terrier, "Gromit," which I have been working on at a snails pace to finish. I really have struggled with rendering the fur, although I think I am making strides to get to the completion of this piece and venture on to my next.  The image included here only shows one side view. I have worked on adding more "mass" to the back of the neck since it had an hour-glass shape. I think now if I smooth out some of the areas of the fur, this piece will be ready. I welcome ALL comments, suggestions, etc.
